Philadelphia-based Firm Launches to Develop Next Generation Nanotechnology Materials
New Company Philadelphia's first Materials-Based Nanotechnology Business PHILADELPHIA -- Versilant Nanotechnologies LLC, Philadelphia's first materials-based nanotechnology company, today announced its formation to begin research into developing futuristic materials for advanced automotive, avionic and aerospace applications. "As former President Clinton highlighted in his last State of the Union Address, nanotechnology will impact every aspect of our lives," said Dr. Cynthia Kuper, president of Versilant Nanotechnologies. "Versilant looks forward to bringing the benefits of nanotechnology out of the laboratory and into the marketplace." Versilant represents the first Philadelphia-based company to focus specifically on manipulating carbon nanotube material at the molecular level to build super-strong fabrics and building materials. The company's main focus is work on carbon nanotubes, a revolutionary new material 100 times stronger than steel (yet weighing 1/6 as much). In the future, Versilant's technologies may lead to innovative advancements in materials, such as the production of a lightweight jacket that functions as a computing device, portable power supply and a ballistic shield. Additional potential consumer applications include extremely light and strong fabrics along with medical applications such as synthetic skin and new vaccinations as well as components that will dramatically reduce the weight of automobiles and spacecraft. About Dr. Cynthia Kuper Dr. Cynthia Kuper serves as company president and chief of research. Kuper, a Temple University graduate, stands at the forefront of nanotechnology research. She has also completed research with Nobel laureate Dr. Richard Smalley at Rice University's nanotechnology laboratory. Kuper was recently named to the Philadelphia Business Journal's prestigious "40 under 40" list of dynamic up and coming leaders in the Philadelphia region.
